Children's books published during a specific era may themselves serve as artifacts of how children were entertained with stories and tales at that time.

Some children's books are designed to teach children about primary sources and will contain excerpts of fact or fictional diaries and other examples of primary source documents.

NEW YORK STATE AND LOCAL NEWSPAPERS

Local newspapers from the eight counties in the greater Rochester/Genesee Valley area are available on microfilm and are listed on the Genesee Valley Collection webpage.

Rochester Democrat and Chronicle 
Most current issue is in café on main floor; issues for past few months are in file cabinet near windows in Teacher Education Resource Center on lower floor of library. Earlier years back to 1969 available on microfilm .  A paper-format subject index back to 1980’s is available on shelves adjacent to microfilm cabinets on lower floor of library.

Magazines published contemporaneously with an event also serve to document how the public was informed of and reacted to events.

Relatively recent primary sources Limit a search to the publication type 'Primary source documents' in Academic Search Premier and MasterFile Premier databases.

Vital Speeches of the Day This periodical contains speeches given by current and past public figures.

Index and full text available from 1934 to the present in EBSCOhost Academic Search Premier Important: On database search screen, enter ‘Vital speeches of the day’ and change search field to' SO Journal Name' to find a list of all speeches included in that publication. To limit a search to speeches by a particular person, add name in one of the search boxes and/or add a topic to find speeches on a particular topic. You may also limit searches by year.

Also try searching in above and other databases under the term 'speeches' without limiting your search to Vital Speeches of the Day.

Register so that you can create groupings of excellent quality images of pottery, sculptures, paintings, drawings, etc. that. you find of interest and organize these in ARTstor for an online presentation. You may search for a specific culture, e.g. Iroquois, or a topic or artist, etc.

Rochester History   Database of articles written by the historian(s) of the city of Rochester based on primary sources published in the magazine, Rochester History. Articles cover all eras of Rochester and Western New York history.  Full text and index online
