Course Instructor: Dr. Steet
My group and I are assigned to create a tri-fold poster using both sides to discuss 4-6th grade American girls as if we were cultural anthropologists. We are to use scholarly sources (most preferably journals and articles) in order to describe the pop culture and education of these girls. For pop culture we need to discuss various things such as media, health, style and social life. To go more indepth we need to discuss ideas such as movies, tv, computers, music, phones, magazines, drugs, eating disorders, sports, music, cliques, hair, make-up, clothing, maturity, boys, bullying and tolerance. On the education side the poster is split up into three topics: history of gender and education, characteristics of gender and education and girlhood.
For scholarly and professional journal articles on girls in popular culture
For sample lessons that you might adapt to make them more 'girl-focused' or girl-friendly'
See lessons in teacher editions of elementary and secondary textbooks for different academic subjects on the shelves in the Teacher Education Resource Center. See signs posted at ends of shelves indicating a school level and subject. Books under each subject with CT call numbers are textbooks. Teacher editions will be labeled.
