CHARACTERISTICS OF K-12 TEXTBOOKS
Textbooks
- are usually designed to provide a year's worth of instruction in a specific academic subject (math, science, etc.) at a specific grade level.
- teacher editions of textbooks contain sample lessons and often, reduced-size pages of the student book.
- content of a textbook MAY OR MAY NOTclosely match national and state standards and curricula.
- are usually published in sets/series for grades K-6 and middle school, and as individual books for grades 9-12.
- often contain a scope and sequence chart, table of contents and an index to help you identify the concepts, skills and understandings they include in a set/series and/or individual books.
- often include suggestions for modifying lessons to meet diverse needs. Scan table of contents and index for help. Also scan individual lessons – modification may be at end of a lesson.
- are of varying quality.
When evaluating textbooks, teachers may consider appropriateness of teaching strategies for their students’ diverse needs, level of interactivity for students, accuracy of content, and other criteria for good teaching and learning.
